Broom-making Class

In this three hour class, students will start their adventure with the basics of broom-making, and have the opportunity to craft two different types of whisk brooms: the turkey-wing and the hawk-tail style. With any leftover broom corn, students might also be able to make a pot scrubber from the other end of their broom length - two brooms for one!  Come learn about the practical side of this timeless art, and leave with the confidence to carry on at home with your two freshly-made brooms!
This class is open to all skill levels, however broom-making does require hand strength and resilience: the ability to open a sealed jar is a good reference point for the hand strength needed to make brooms.

Saturday, April 5th from 10:00am to 1:00pm
Materials fee: $45

Instructor bio: Bri Oseland (they/she) is a full time woodshop instructor, and relishes being surrounded by other makers and problem solvers at work. Bri previously worked at Fireweed Woodshop, where they were introduced to a variety of woodworking projects including spoon carving, broom-making, chip carving, and an introduction to power tools.  This interest in wood has continued with their current job at Urban Boatbuilders, where Bri has added milling work, and teaching how to make skin-on-frame wooden boats and longboards. The focus of Bri’s work is functional art: handmade objects that can be used in daily life.
