Hans Christian Andersen, a master storyteller, was born April 2, 1805 in Denmark, the only son of a cobbler and an illiterate washerwoman. He wrote more than 150 tales, along with several novels and three autobigraphies. These 30 stories range from exuberant early works, such as Thumbelina and The Emperor’s New Clothes, to lesser-known tales such as The Ice Maiden and The Wood Nymph.
