Between 1850 and 1930 hundreds of thousands of Norwegians, Swedes, Finns, Danes and Icelanders emigrated to Minnesota. Farmers, miners and laborers, they quickly came to dominate and shape the state's politics, starting at the local levels, then as governors, state senators and house members, and ultimately as president of the United States. The influence of the nordic immigrant has made Minnesota a truly unique state that has affected those wll beyond its borders. This exploration of the historic migration also shows the continuing importance of immigration to America.
