Accidental Shepherd

How a California Girl Rescued an Ancient Mountain Farm in Norway. By Liese Greensfelder.

In 1972, a young Liese came to the Norwegian town of Øystese to work on a farm for summer. Little did she know that the Johannes, who hired her, had been hospitalized after a stroke. The next day, she was dropped off at the farm to look over it "for a few days," with no experience. The farm was in the mountains above the Hardanger Fjord at the end of a dirt road. 115 sheep, two cows, one calf, and a draft horse and herding dog all came along with. Follow along Liese's story as she gets by with rudimentary Danish and learns from her neighbors how to feed the animals and the history ofthe area.
