Nikolai Astrup (1880–1928) was a unique Norwegian Modernist known for his colorful paintings and woodcuts. Astrup received his art education in Kristiania (now Oslo), Germany, and Paris, but would eventually push back against traditional conventions of fine art. Despite spending time in metropolitan cities, he favored his childhood home in rural Norway, where he produced the majority of his well known work.
