Blackwork is a type of embroidery that dates back as early as the 1400s when black silk thread was used to adorn white collars and cuffs. Traditionally, blackwork embroidery was made using black threads on white fabric, and is still generally stitched with a dark thread of any color on a light background. Blackwork uses repeated geometric patterns to fill design areas, and is regarded as a counted thread technique. When worked with a double running stitch, the piece is identical on both sides, i.e. reversible.
